On a quiet day with no news of a quake, the ground beneath the Philippines is still moving. PHIVOLCS records an average of around 20 earthquakes every day — most far too small to feel — and roughly 100 to 150 are strong enough to be felt each year. Why is one country so restless? The answer is written into its geography.
It sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire
The Ring of Fire is a horseshoe-shaped belt tracing the edges of the Pacific Ocean, from the Andes up through North America, across to Japan, and down through the Philippines and Indonesia. It's where most of the world's earthquakes and active volcanoes occur — because it marks the boundaries where the Earth's tectonic plates meet, grind, and dive beneath one another.
The Philippines sits squarely inside this belt. That single fact explains both its frequent earthquakes and its 20-plus active volcanoes: they're two symptoms of the same underlying force.
It's caught in a tectonic squeeze
Most countries border one plate boundary, if any. The Philippines is wedged between at least three major tectonic plates — the westward-moving Philippine Sea Plate, the Eurasian (Sunda) Plate to the west, and, further out, the influence of the Indo-Australian Plate.
The islands themselves largely make up what geologists call the Philippine Mobile Belt — a broken, complicated zone that absorbs the pressure of these converging plates. Instead of one clean fault line, the country is a patchwork of faults and subduction zones all accommodating the squeeze at once. That complexity is exactly why the seismicity is so constant.
It has trenches on both sides
This is the unusual part. Many earthquake-prone regions have a subduction trench on one side. The Philippines is flanked by them on both:
- The Manila Trench and related trenches to the west, where the Sunda Plate's edge dives down.
- The Philippine Trench — about 1,320 km long — to the east, where the Philippine Sea Plate plunges beneath the islands.
These subduction zones are capable of the country's largest earthquakes and, because they lie underwater, of generating tsunamis. The magnitude-7.6 Surigao del Sur quake of 2023 and the magnitude-7.8 Sarangani quake of 2026 both came from this eastern system.
And a giant fault runs right through the middle
As if bracketing trenches weren't enough, the Philippine Fault Zone — a 1,200-km fault — slices diagonally through the archipelago from Luzon to Mindanao, cutting directly beneath populated land. Onshore quakes along its segments (like the 1990 Luzon and 2020 Masbate earthquakes) can be especially destructive because they strike right where people live. The trade-off of living here
The same tectonic forces that make the Philippines shake also built it — the volcanoes, the mountains, the fertile soil, the islands themselves. Earthquakes aren't a malfunction; they're the planet actively making the country. That can't be changed. What can change is how ready we are for them.
So what does this mean for you?
Frequent small quakes are normal and harmless — they're the background hum of active geology. The real task is being prepared for the occasional large one, which the country's setting guarantees will come. That means knowing whether you live near a fault or coast, securing your home, and having a plan.
