The Philippines has been shaking for as long as people have lived on it. Written records stretch back to the Spanish colonial era, when friars documented earthquakes that flattened newly built stone churches almost as fast as they went up. Centuries later, the hazard is the same — the country sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, wrapped by trenches and cut through by active faults.
Looking back at the disasters that shaped the nation isn't morbid; it's instructive. Each of these earthquakes changed how Filipinos build, warn, and prepare. Here is a timeline of the most significant.
The Great Luzon Earthquake ~600+ deaths
Often called the most terrible earthquake in Philippine annals. Striking in the evening, it devastated Spanish Manila — crumbling newly built cathedrals, government buildings and homes inside Intramuros. It reshaped colonial architecture, pushing builders toward the low, thick-walled "earthquake baroque" style that survives in old churches today.
The Fall of Manila ~400–1,000 deaths
A shallow quake beneath the capital laid the city in ruins in under a minute. It destroyed the Manila Cathedral, the Governor's Palace and nearly every church except San Agustin. The catastrophe prompted some of the first serious scientific study of earthquakes in the country.
Casiguran Earthquake & the Ruby Tower ~270 deaths
Though centred in Casiguran, its most infamous toll came in Manila, where the six-storey Ruby Tower collapsed and killed hundreds. The disaster became a turning point for building codes and structural safety in the Philippines.
Moro Gulf Earthquake & Tsunami ~5,000–8,000 deaths
The deadliest in modern Philippine history. The magnitude-8.0 offshore quake generated a tsunami that struck the coasts of Mindanao and Sulu in the dark of night. The waves — not the shaking — caused the vast majority of deaths, a stark lesson in coastal tsunami risk that still shapes warnings today.
The Luzon Earthquake ~2,400 deaths
A rupture of the Philippine Fault's Digdig segment tore across Luzon, devastating Baguio and Dagupan. Hotels and buildings pancaked, most memorably the Hyatt Terraces in Baguio. The images of collapsed high-rises drove sweeping changes to the national building code.
Mindoro Earthquake & Tsunami ~78 deaths
A quake on the Aglubang River Fault triggered a local tsunami that swept coastal towns of Oriental Mindoro. It was another reminder that even "moderate" magnitudes can be deadly when they strike near the shore.
The Bohol Earthquake ~222 deaths
A previously unmapped fault ruptured beneath Bohol, killing 222 people and injuring nearly a thousand. It destroyed centuries-old churches across the island and pushed up a dramatic surface "wall" of ground rupture — a vivid demonstration of a fault at work.
What the record teaches us
Read together, these disasters reveal patterns that still matter:
The danger comes from two directions. Offshore subduction quakes (1976, and the recent M7.8 in 2026) can be huge and tsunami-generating; inland fault quakes (1645, 1990, 2013) may be smaller but strike directly beneath cities. The Philippines is exposed to both.
Old and poorly built structures kill. From Intramuros' churches in 1863 to the Ruby Tower in 1968 and Baguio's hotels in 1990, the deadliest failures were buildings. Nearly every major quake has tightened the building code — progress written in hindsight.
Coasts must not wait for a warning. The 1976 and 1994 tsunamis arrived within minutes. The enduring rule: after strong shaking near the coast, move to higher ground immediately.
History isn't finished
